The Memorial Chamber at the top of the Nebraska State Capitol honors citizens in service of others. In 1929 the Grand Army of the Republic Auxiliary, the Women’s Relief Corps, dedicated two plaques in the Chamber. One plaque features the original Memorial Day Proclamation of 1868 whereby May 30 is designated for the “strewing of flowers or otherwise decorating of the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country” and the other features the Gettysburg Address delivered over the graves of fallen soldiers. The Nebraska State Capitol is dedicated to the memory of those who fell in service of their county. The Capitol will be open for Memorial Day visitors from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. While at the Capitol visitors are encouraged to visit the 14th floor and pause for reflection in the black and green marble lined chamber. The 8 murals by Omaha artist Stephen Roberts, remind us of the times in military and civic strife when citizens are called to service. The plaques, including the Medal of Honor plaque, remind of the sacrifices made by our military in service of others.
