It Happens Once a Year

The Nebraska State Capitol presents it main entrance to the north and the newly renovated Centennial Mall. When the Capitol was completed in 1932 Lincoln’s hub was downtown; the new Capitol was oriented to face the commercial district and the University of Nebraska. This orientation, to the north, means that the Capitol grand stair and main entrance are only seen in sunlight once a year, during the solstice. In the next few weeks the Capitol’s north facade will shine brightly in the early morning and late afternoon sun. Viewed from the newly renovated Centennial Mall, the Capitol will present its main entrance beautifully in the golden light of summer. Please take advantage of the opportunity to see Wisdom, Justice, Power and Mercy, the Constant Guardian of the Law in a different light, sunlight.
