State Forester Scott Josiah reminded those assembled of the ReTree Nebraska efforts to plant 1,000,000 trees in Nebraska between 2007 and 2017.

Mark Derowitsch of the Arbor Day Foundation emphasized the importance of trees in improving our environment by reducing soil erosion, helping conserve energy by shading homes in summer and blocking cold winds in winter and cleaning the air we breathe.

St. Mary’s fourth and fifth grade students sang for the group and then ReTree Honorary Chair and First Lady Sally Ganem read the Governor Dave Heineman’s Arbor Day Proclamation.

The program was completed and it was time to plant the tree.  Mrs. Ganem invited the St. Mary’s students to help.
