Capitol sculptor Lee Lawrie’s relief sculpture on the northeast corner of the Capitol represents Nebraska, a pioneer woman wearing a bison robe and carrying scepter of corn, presenting the 37th star for the flag to Washington, D.C. represented by Columbia seated on an eagle throne. Carrying the flag beside her is a Civil War veteran. Nebraska was admitted to the union only after the Civil War. Behind Nebraska follow the pioneering farmers who will help build the state.
