For over 25 years, Nebraska State Capitol Tourism Aide Gloria Witherspoon has helped Nebraska’s fourth graders understand the artwork and symbolism of the Capitol. On October 6, 2015 Gloria retired from her position with the Office of the Capitol Commission. She will take with her memories of the almost 500,000 students who gathered around her as she explained the way the Capitol serves as a home for the executive, legislative and judicial branches of government and told the story of Nebraska’s Native American and pioneer history. Through her stories of Nebraska and her description of the legislative process, Gloria has inspired thousands of children to appreciate Nebraska’s unique place in the nation. Gloria developed a fan base among fourth grade teachers and was frequently requested for their tour of the Capitol. Teachers, students, and others who visited the Capitol would often come back years later just to see her. Fourth grade students became university students who visited the Capitol and remembered Gloria as their field trip tour guide. The Office of the Capitol Commission will miss her almost as much as the teachers and students who relied on her to provide a fun and informative tour. Commenting on her upcoming retirement Gloria said, “I will miss talking to the teachers and students, but I will take with me the bright faces and happy smiles, and the thank you notes from the classes. I want to remind all students, past and present, how important a good education will be in their future.” It is this dedication to the students of Nebraska and their education that made Gloria a valuable Capitol tour office member.
